IN THE DARK: INTERIORS NOIR

BLACK is one of the most effective of all colors. BLACK is the one color which represents a total neutrality on the one hand, and complete visual dominance on the other. In additive color theory, it is the total absence of all light (i.e. color); in subtractive color theory, it is the absence of any hue color. BLACK is daring and dramatic, bold and sophisticated.

BLACK paired with white and grey.

BLACK is forceful and powerful- overpowering and morose. Historically, BLACK has been the color associated with evil, gloom, death, and crime. However, BLACK is also be associated with mystery, secrecy, power, and social status. BLACK's effects on a space can be powerful as an accent color to create a focal point, or it can help to ground an airy space, and it is said to be too depressing if used in excess. The trick in using it in large quantities in a space is incorporating the balance of light, hue, value, and texture. This weeks Photos for Friday is my collection of clippings of my all time favorite color, as an accent, as an interior, or in fashion: B L A C K .

(Don't care for print on runner or rug,
but really like the composition of the chase & mirror, along with the reflection in it.)

BLACK can also be added to a green
outdoor space and be paired with pops of white...

or create a dramatic interior look outdoors...

What do you think about black?
What do you like or dislike about it?
I for one LOVE it...

Have a wonderful weekend...

  4. It is a strong evocative color...I like bits of it to anchor a room. But too much and it feels "unhappy" to me. That last pic...with the green however is amazing!
